Oklahoma!

Oklahoma!
February 15-23, 2025Description
Come on out to the Old West with VOPA in their biggest production to date, performed at the historic El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood. Two incredible casts will alternate between 8 performances over two weekends. If you saw VOPA’s smash hit, Fiddler on the Roof, last June, you’ll recognize some favorites on stage, including Tevye himself, Dylan F. Thomas. This is a production not to be missed, so bring your family along and enjoy the ride!
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, setting the standards and rules of modern musical theatre. In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land.

Gina Zo

Gina Zo is a rock-pop singer-songwriter and powerhouse vocalist from the Philadelphia suburbs, now based in Los Angeles, known for her bold authenticity and empowering music. Her 2023 anthem "Faking It" unapologetically embraces her bisexuality, making her a vocal advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community and reinforcing her commitment to living truthfully in a world that often demands conformity. With early influences ranging from Norah Jones to Stevie Nicks, Gina’s musical journey has evolved through personal trials, including a transformative experience on The Voice under Gwen Stefani’s mentorship. After a brief disillusionment with the music industry, she found her artistic identity through Velvet Rouge, a rock band that channels defiance and freedom. Recognized as Best Rock Band in Philly and featured on NPR and WXPN, Velvet Rouge is breaking barriers for women in music. Gina’s relentless pursuit of artistic truth and empowerment continues as she prepares to release new music with Grammy-winning producer Justin Miller, positioning her as a revolutionary force in pop-rock music.

Yaniv Snir

After a 25-year hiatus from the stage—spent wrangling international development projects and business strategies—Yaniv made his grand return in VOPA’s recent production of Oklahoma!. Now, he’s doubling down with VOPA's Best of Broadway...and Everything Else, because apparently, once you start jazz-handing, you just can’t stop. He thanks his family for their patience, his colleagues for still pretending to understand, and the audience for indulging his ongoing mid-life theatrical renaissance.

Bonnie Samotin

Bonnie Samotin is delighted to join the amazing cast and crew of Oklahoma - her second VOPA production. Additional credits include Hello Dolly (Ensemble), Fiddler on the Roof (Grandma Tzeitel Cover/Ensemble) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (Ensemble); Bonnie works as an associate producer for documentaries and other nonfiction film projects, and has interviewed civil rights leaders, WWII veterans, Holocaust survivors, various experts, celebrities and more. She is excited to come out from behind the camera onto the musical theater stage. A big thank you to her teachers, family and friends for their loving support.

Debra Kamenir

Debra Kamenir is thrilled to be performing in VOPA’s production of Oklahoma! She recently performed with VOPA’s production of Fiddler On The Roof as a bottle dancer and in the ensemble. Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, Deb developed a love of singing and dancing as a little girl. Inspired by her mother Claire, Deb joined Maestra Noreen Green’s choir at Temple Ramat Zion some 40 years ago, where she and Claire sang together. Debra has appeared alongside her husband (acclaimed pianist, accompanist, composer and arranger David Kamenir) performing medleys and duets with such groups as The Pierce College Community Choir and The Encore Singers. She also performs with Happy Notes, a harmony group led by Kim Levett that performs regularly at various venues throughout Los Angeles. Deb studied ballet and jazz dance for many years, and often choreographs dance routines to accompany her groups’ vocal performances. Debra majored in music at Pierce College and currently studies voice with vocal coach and mentor Tova Morcos. When not dancing or singing, you can find Deb styling hair in her private hair salon in Tarzana.

Judy Rosenfeld

Some other memorable times onstage include performances in The Music Man (Pick-A-Little lady “Alma Hix”), Ragtime (immigrant), The Crucible (“Sarah Good”), Guys & Dolls (Hotbox doll) and Our Town (“Mrs. Soames”). He has been singing in choirs for several decades, and is a veteran of UCLA Opera’s fully-staged productions of La Boheme (chorus) and La Traviata (chorus); studio recordings of numerous choral works including film scores; and VOPA’s wonderful production of Fiddler on the Roof (pit chorus). Perry is honored and delighted to be participating in Oklahoma! and is grateful to Dylan, Noreen, Shira and Julia for giving him the opportunity to come out and play for a spell.

David Bruskin

Not a native Angeleno, David Bruskin did not appear in plays and musicals as a child and was not bit by the theatre bug in school. Without that ambition, he did not attend Carnegie-Mellon University as a drama major, after which he did not continue his studies at Yale Drama School. He did not cut his teeth on myriad dramatic and comic roles, especially not musicals. After he did not graduate from NYU, David was not paying his dues as a waiter in an upscale New York restaurant when he wasn’t discovered by a Broadway producer who shall not remain nameless (Hal Prince – not him.) When David’s hidden talents did not emerge, word did not spread – and the rest, as they don’t say, is not history. David is not honored to make his premier performance in tonight’s presentation of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. He is available for weddings and bar mitzvahs... or not.

Bella enjoyed her most recent experience in the ensemble of Beauty and the Beast and is excited to add Oklahoma! to her growing list of credits.
